Thinking About a Pyrolytic Oven? Here’s Why It’s Worth It
At Hotpoint, our ovens are thoughtfully designed to help you cook delicious meals with ease – and to save you time where it matters. Which is especially true when it comes to our ovens with pyrolytic technology, which we’re shining a spotlight on in this in-depth guide…

What is an oven with pyrolytic technology?
An oven with pyrolytic technology features a self-cleaning function that uses high temperatures to turn grease, grime and food residue into ash. Once the cycle is complete and the oven has cooled, all that’s left to do is wipe the base clean – no scrubbing, no chemicals.
Aside from this clever cleaning feature, ovens with pyrolytic technology offer the same great cooking performance and multifunctionality you’d expect from a dependable Hotpoint oven.

How do pyrolytic ovens work?
Depending on the model you own, the pyrolytic cleaning cycle may be accessed in different ways. On ovens with a digital display, it’s typically found within the ‘Manual’ or cleaning menu. For models with manual dials, look for the pyrolytic symbol – usually shown as a square with dots inside.
Before starting the pyrolytic cycle, always remove the shelves, trays and side supports from the oven, as these parts are not designed to withstand the high temperatures used during cleaning.
If in doubt, check your product manual here.
Once selected, this is how the cycle works:
- The door of the oven will automatically lock for safety, so that it cannot be accidentally opened while the appliance is heated to a very high temperature.
- The oven will heat up to 470°C.
- At this temperature, grease and fat caught onto catalytic liners can burn off the oven’s compartment without the need to use detergents.
- The entire pyrolytic cleaning cycle will typically run for between two and four hours, depending on your oven’s settings.
At the end of this cycle, residue should have turned to ash ready for you to quickly and simply dust away once the oven has cooled down.
Why our pyrolytic ovens are safe to use
During the pyrolytic cleaning cycle, the oven door will automatically lock and remain secured until the internal temperature drops to a safe level. This built-in safety feature ensures the high heat used during cleaning poses no risk to you or your household.
Hotpoint pyrolytic ovens also include additional protective measures. For example, the cooling fan increases its intensity during the cycle to help regulate external temperatures and protect nearby cabinetry from heat exposure.
There’s no need for chemical cleaners – once the cycle is complete and the oven has cooled, you simply wipe away the remaining ash with a damp cloth.
Do pyrolytic ovens need special wiring?
Typically, pyrolytic ovens typically require a dedicated electrical circuit with a higher amperage to safely handle their high-power demands.
However, Hotpoint pyrolytic ovens are designed with convenience in mind. They come fitted with a 13-amp plug, making installation quick and easy. Simply remove your old appliance and plug in your new oven.
